A clear and supportive path forward

Whether you’re seeking support for yourself, your child, or a family member, our goal is to make the process as simple, supportive, and easy to navigate as possible.

Taking the first step can feel overwhelming. From your first enquiry through to ongoing support, we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

How it works

Start now

Reach out online, call our team, or submit an enquiry.

We’ll take the time to understand your needs, answer any initial questions, and help identify the most appropriate support options.

You don’t need to know exactly who to book with.

Based on your needs, goals, age, preferences, and availability, we’ll help connect you with the clinician best suited to support you. We’ll reach out if we require more information to make sure you’re connected with the right person.

After we’ve found the right clinician for you, we’ll book you in for the first few appointments. This ensures everyone is comfortable with the support plan going forward and removes any uncertainty around wait times. If something changes and the appointments no longer fit in your schedule, just let us know in advance and we can reschedule.

You’ll receive an email with information about your clinician, appointment details, fees, and directions to the clinic. We’ll also take the payment for your first appointment so you don’t have to worry about it on the day.

We’ll send you intake forms to complete prior to your first appointment. This is also a great time to make sure you’ve got all your required documents or information to bring to your appointment—these might include your Mental Health Treatment Plan, Medicare card or your Private Health Insurance details.

You’ll also receive an SMS reminder a few days before your appointment to help you stay on track.

When you arrive, one of our friendly reception team members will welcome you and let your clinician know you’ve arrived.

We recommend arriving approximately 10 minutes early to allow time for any required paperwork.

Your first session is an opportunity to discuss what’s been happening, explore your goals, and begin developing a plan that feels right for you.

Every person’s journey is different, and support will always be tailored to your individual needs.

Your first appointment

What happens in the first session?

The first appointment is about getting to know you and understanding what has brought you to Better Life.

Your clinician may ask questions about:

  • Current concerns
  • Personal, family, or developmental history
  • School, work, or daily life
  • Previous support or assessments
  • Goals for therapy or assessment

You don’t need to prepare anything special or have all the answers. The first session is simply the beginning of a conversation.

If you’re the parent or carer of the patient, we’ll spend approximately half of the first session without the child present to gain important context, answer questions or discuss possible clinical approaches.

What should I bring?

Depending on your situation, it may be helpful to bring:

  • A referral from your GP or specialist (if applicable)
  • Your Medicare card
  • Your private health insurance card (if applicable)
  • Any previous reports, assessments, or relevant documentation

If additional information is required, our team will let you know before your appointment.

Fees and rebates

Psychology appointments start from $240 per hour, and OT appointments start from $193.99. Fees vary depending on the type of service and clinician you are seeing.

Prior to your appointment, we’ll provide clear information about the relevant fees and any available rebates. Where eligible, we can process Medicare and private health fund rebates at the completion of your appointment.

If you have any questions about fees, rebates, or referrals, our team is happy to help.

Frequently asked questions

Can I choose my clinician?

Yes. If there is a particular clinician you would like to see, please let us know when making your enquiry. We’ll always do our best to accommodate clinician preferences where possible. However, appointment availability can vary, and our team may recommend another clinician with earlier availability who is well suited to your needs and goals. You also have the option of being placed on your preferred clinician’s waitlist if they currently have no availability.

Can I use a Mental Health Care Plan?

Yes. Eligible clients may be able to access Medicare rebates through a Mental Health Care Plan provided by their GP. Please speak with your GP or contact our team if you have any questions about eligibility or referrals.

Can I use my Private Health Insurance?

You may be able to—it depends on your level of cover. We can swipe your health insurance card before you pay, and any rebate will be applied immediately, so you only pay the gap. Keep in mind that you can’t claim both Medicare and private health insurance for the same appointment.

What happens after I submit an enquiry?

Once we receive your enquiry, our team will review the information provided and contact you to discuss options and next steps. This may include recommending a clinician, discussing appointment availability, and answering any questions about referrals, funding, or the services available.

We will often contact you within 2 business days. Sometimes we may consult with clinicians first, which may take up to 1 week. You’re also welcome to ring us at any time to check progress and ask questions.

What if I’m not sure what support I need?

That’s completely okay.

You don’t need to know exactly what service or clinician you’re looking for before contacting us. Our team will help guide you towards the most appropriate support, whether that’s with our clinicians or another path.

How much do appointments and assessments cost?

While charges vary according to clinician qualifications, our most common fee is $240 per 1 hour session (OT starting from $193.99 per hour).

Assessment fees vary from $1,000 to $2,500, based on the type of assessment and the amount of appointment hours required. The fees cover a mix of face to face time, assessment, report writing and feedback. We can provide an indication of likely total cost upon booking, and then confirm any fee changes after your first session with the clinician if the plan needs adjusting.

How long are appointments?

Most therapy appointments run for 50–60 minutes, while assessment appointments may be longer. Your clinician or our administration team will discuss appointment lengths with you when booking.

Do you offer telehealth appointments?

Depending on your clinician and circumstances, telehealth appointments are likely to be available. Please speak with our team to discuss the options available.

Can parents attend appointments?

Yes. Parents and caregivers are an important part of a child’s therapy journey.

Depending on your child’s age, needs, and goals, sessions may involve parents directly, include regular parent feedback, or focus on strategies that can be used at home. Your clinician will discuss the best approach with you.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can contact Better Life directly to access most services. However, a referral may be required if you wish to access Medicare rebates or certain government-funded programs, such as Workcover or DVA.

Do you support NDIS participants?

Absolutely, we support NDIS participants to achieve their goals every day. Psychology and OT are often funded through the NDIS, under Capacity Building—Improved Daily Living. In some circumstances, other support budgets may also be used, depending on your situation. We’re always happy to discuss.

Is there parking available at the clinic?

Yes, there is free parking at the clinic, as well as disabled parking and access.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule?

We understand that circumstances can change. If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, please contact us as soon as possible. Appointments cancelled with less than one full business day’s notice may incur a cancellation fee.

See our full cancellation policy here.
